Ok, so the season got started last night with the made-for-ESPN game with the Phils and Braves. It has become a tradition (five years???) that ESPN gets the first game of the season, but for the ultimate baseball fans… TODAY IS OPENING DAY.
Growing up, it was always the first Monday of April when we used to see the first pitch at old Riverfront Stadium The game always started at like 12:35. It was tradition. I remember seeing the highlights and watching guys like Pete Rose, Tom Seaver, Johnny Bench and more wearing their stirrups just above their ankles and someone very famous always throwing out the first pitch.
Baseball is a right of spring. With the weather warming up in Philadelphia, you start to see the grass grow and flowers start to bloom and baseball returning to ballparks all around the country.
And it doesn’t matter if it is the Majors or Little League… the first pitch of baseball season is a special thing.
So, everyone enjoy the true “First Day of Baseball Season”. Root for all of your favorites… Ichiro, Howard, Halladay, Sabathia, Beckett and all the rest.
Baseball is our game… America’s Game.
As Ernie Harwell said in his great poem about baseball… “It’s a game for men, but you have to have a lot of ‘little boy’ in you as well.”
162 games to go… have a great summer.
